Student Success Story (SSS)
I have a few students who have challenges, but who never stop trying to do their best.
One of them has possibly caused a lot of his own problems but has not realized it yet.
He is a hard worker, but he also has a short fuse. I have been trying to talk to him so
that we can get him the assistance he needs to graduate. The problem is follow-through. He has had to grow up quickly and in doing so has made some bad decisions
in his short time here on earth. We have to find a way to keep him motivated to follow
his dream of becoming a nurse. He may have to start off as a CNA, but I believe if given
a chance he will be successful.
OUR MOTTO: Enrolled, Enlisted, or Employed
January has been busy because I, unfortunately, missed two weeks of school due to
family circumstances. I had the pleasure of meeting the new CCR teacher, Mr. Moore.
He is a welcomed addition to MPHS and much appreciated. I am now able to go into
our CCR classes and speak with the students about YouScience, and give them information
about enrolling in college, being employed after graduation, or enlistment in the
military.
I signed all of the students in Mr. Moore’s class to take the YouScience assessment and
they are completing it at a steady pace. Mr. Moore has been a great help in encouraging
them to complete it.
Everyone involved in The Pathway That Pays event thought it was a success. I talked to
a couple of the students and parents from Moss Point.
I spoke with students who are second years in the welding program in the CTE building
about Ingalls hiring event, and they are very excited about the opportunity.
I attended the Bagley Luncheon that was sponsored by Mississippi State’s Engineering
Program on the Coast. It was very informative and I learned a lot to bring back to our
students who may be interested in engineering.
Mr. Moore and I meet with Mrs. Jerica Hudson from Singing River Federal Credit Union
to discuss how the Money Talks program works. We are excited to have them come into
our school in March to educate the students on financial matters.
GET ENROLLED
I haven’t heard from many students about enrollment, except the ones who have
applied and are now trying to make sure they have all of their paperwork submitted. We
did have to cancel a student trip to Mississippi State, due to a lack of participation. I am
sure money was an issue for some students, but we will have to plan earlier, so the
students can plan accordingly.
GET ENLISTED
I have been talking with Commander Lambert about setting up a time for the ASVAB
and the military career day. I have also contacted several branches of the military to
come and speak to our CCR students and to set up in the commons area during lunch
waves. Mr. Moore said that quite a few students are interested in the military, after Sgt.
Phifer, with the Air Force, stopped in to talk with them last week.
GET EMPLOYED
I talked to one student who wants to be a vet tech, but she will not be able to get a job
or shadow because she is not eighteen years old. I talked with another student who has
been banned from the local hospital because of his bad behavior. A lot of our kids have
jobs or are having a hard time finding one locally.
